Objectives:
Model: We will be doing a vocabulary picture sort and match game to help us closely examine our new vocabulary words as they apply to our lesson. On the board, I will have photographs representing the vocabulary words, and I will also have printed the vocabulary words. They will be scrambled, as not to match. You and your classmates will be called upon to match the words to the photographs. Together we will then determine their place in a flow chart. For a few of the words I will discuss their conventional spelling and syllabic structure. We will then go on to define parts of the Everglades as they apply to the flow of energy in biology.
Guided Practice: Students will get into groups in their tables (3-4 people), and break the vocabulary words they chose up into root words that will help them remember (ex: bio). Then discuss the vocabulary words and how you can remember when to use the correct term (ex: is a swamp the same thing as a wetland?) Independent Practice: At home, you will be creating a public service announcement commercial using at least one vocabulary word. You can work by yourself or in a group of up to four students, but keep in mind that you will have to use one vocabulary word per person, and they will need to be present! You will have to spell the word during the commercial, as to get the public's attention. Have fun, be creative! Use the main idea chart (graphic organizer) to help you collect your ideas.
- The student will be able to recognize, spell, understand and define the words as they are applied to the world.
- The student will be able to see how energy and resources travel through ecosystems within the Everglades.
